"Fellside" By M.R. Carey

Jess Moulson grew up surrounded by addiction which is why she avoided drugs and alcohol until she met John, a handsome guy who likes to party. One trip on heroine is all it takes for Jess to destroy her life. Living together in a run down and sketchy apartment, Jess befriends a young boy, Alex. They like one another's company, often just sitting in the hallway chatting. All it takes is one good high to completely destroy her life. She wakes up in a hospital and discovers her apartment building had experienced a terrible fire, taking Alex as its victim. If that wasn't bad enough, Jess is the number one suspect and she can't remember a thing. She is sentenced to Fellside, a notoriously violent prison, on a murder charge. Fighting for her life as she becomes a target of violence she eventually finds peace in a new friend, a friend that is not human.

This book was pretty darn good. There were parts where I became confused, not sure where the story was going. The ending was great. I had a hunch the book would get better so I held on and it did not disappoint. I have never been to jail, let alone prison, but this book depicted what I think may be some real life scenarios. At times it was intense, making my stomach crawl, but I think that's what kept me reading.

Three out of five stars.
