"The Never King" By Nikki St. Crowe
Every year on their 18th birthday a Darling girl goes missing and when they reappear they're never the same . It's the eve of Winnie Darling's 18th birthday and she's anything but scared. Her mom has never been stable mentally and Winnie is convinced her stories of a man named Pan are just part of her illness. To put her mom at ease Winnie plays along promising to be safe, lock herself in her room, and not let "the man" get her. Within a few minutes everything her mom has been terrified of becomes reality. Winnie sees the man then everything goes dark and when she wakes she is not in her bedroom. Is she going crazy like her mother? Was what appeared to be her mother's insanity real, a warning?
First things first, this is NOT a book for young readers. Not because it's scary but because it's very inappropriate. I was not expecting the story to unfold like it did but I still enjoyed it. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys in this book are not the same characters from the story we grew up reading. Although The Never King threw me a massive curve ball I would read it again. I'm not sure I should recommend it to everyone. Visit Crowe's Instagram and you'll get an idea of her style of writing.
Five out of five stars.
