Book Forty-Three

Writer: Constance Lowry-ByeConstance Lowry-Bye

"The Lovely Bones" By Alice Sebold

Susie Salmon was only fourteen years old when she was murdered. An adventurous, sweet, and exceptionally smart young girl with her whole life ahead of her. This book follows Susie's new life in heaven. Watching over her friends and family as they struggle with her loss and try to move on with their lives. The frustration she faces watching her killer continue to get away.

I saw this movie years ago when it was first released. At the time I was not a lover of books (crazy, right?). I found this copy at Goodwill and decided that for $1 it was worth a shot. I remember hating the ending of the movie but was pleasantly surprised (as it usually goes) the ending of the book was SO much better! This book had me feeling all the feels! It was heartwarming, heartbreaking, and so frustrating! If you're reluctant to pick up this book because of Susie's tragedy I would tell you to just try it. It wasn't as graphic as you might imagine. Yes, there are portions that are difficult to read but Sebold is good about not going into too much detail. The story is really based on life after the murder not the murder itself.

Four out of five stars.
