"Ghoster" By Jason Arnopp
*SPOILER ALERT"
Kate Collins suffers from addiction. Like millions she is addicted to her phone. After an accident Kate has sworn off social media, replacing her smart phone with an old flip phone. Life has been much less stressful since her change, she even met the boy of her dreams! Scott was Mr. Right from the moment she met him. He has the same favorite movie and choice in music. It seemed fast when Scott asked Kate to move in but she was ready for an adventure. When Kate shows up at his apartment with all her stuff she finds the place completely empty. After being ghosted for three days she is starting to get worried. While staring out at the beautiful ocean from his balcony she notices something weird. His cell phone, laying there, near the edge. After her discovery strange things begin to happen. Things that make her question her sanity. Where is Scott? Why did he leave his cell phone? What's the reason his apartment is empty? What will her addiction cost her this time?
My interest was peeked almost immediately. I loved Kate's character and felt the fear she felt. The pain she felt in being ghosted. The terror she felt when she realized Scott was not safe. Ghoster was great, except for the ending. I HATE when a book is so good and the ending sucks. It turns the whole story sour and leaves me feeling disappointed. Kate starts seeing ghosts while in the apartment. Toward the end she even sees Scott's ghost. You discover at the end that the phone is haunted in a way. Anyone who tries to destroy the phone dies. Those were the ghosts that Kate saw, victims of the phone. Sounds crazy awesome right? How did the phone become haunted? What causes these deaths? I don't know, you tell me, because Arnopp certainly didn't! All you learn is that these horrible events occur because of "The Master". Yup, that's it! No backstory. Kate ends up in some weird place after falling victim and it ends with her as ghost scaring the new owners of the phone. THE ENDING WAS SO DUMB! Such a waste of an otherwise awesome story.
Three out of five stars.
