Book Thirty-Three

Writer: Constance Lowry-ByeConstance Lowry-Bye

“Hostage” By Clare Mackintosh

Mina and Adam tried for years to get pregnant but with no luck they decided to look into adoption. When the couple met Sophia they fell in love despite the many issues she faced. These issues take a toll on their marriage and when Adam is accused of cheating, Mina wastes no time kicking him out. Now single, Mina decides to go back to work as a flight attendant. Although she was reluctant, what’s the worst that could happen? Most mothers have jobs outside the home. Everything will be fine. Only it won’t be. Not long into the flight Mina is given an ultimatum. Help hijack the plane or her daughter dies. Only two hours into a twenty hour flight Mina must decide. Risk the life of hundreds or risk the life of one, her daughter.

Let me be clear. This is not a thriller. This is not a “sit on the edge of your seat, page turner”. If that’s what you’re looking for, don’t. That’s what I was expecting but not what I got. Is the story line good? Sure. Does it accurately portray the unbreakable bond between a child and parent? I think so. Will it make you feel as if you’re on that plane? No. When I read the summary I was expecting some crazy twists. Like, who the hijacker might be but when I found out it make no sense. It’s like the author had this great idea but just threw in some random “plot twist”. Not the story I was expecting which was disappointing.

Three out of five stars.
